Defining Hazing
Hazing is defined as subjecting individuals to abuse, humiliation, or psychological distress before they can join a group or team. Often orchestrated by senior members, coaches, or advisors, these rituals may involve various harmful activities, including sleep deprivation, public humiliation, forced physical activities, sexual acts, and more.
How often does hazing occur?
Hazing incidents are unfortunately not isolated occurrences; they may be perpetuated by a decades-long tradition, often defended by those who participate. In the United States, over 250,000 students may face ridicule and injuries due to hazing incidents annually. The impact is further exacerbated as these incidents can be shared on social media, causing victims to relive their trauma repeatedly.
Common Settings for Hazing Traditions
Hazing traditions are prevalent in various organizations, including universities, Greek life (fraternities and sororities), summer camps, military units, athletic teams, workplaces, elite clubs, honor societies, middle schools, and high schools.
